Should Astronauts Return to the Moon?

After Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, 10 other U.S. astronauts visited the moon. But no one has set foot there since 1972. That may soon change. President Donald Trump wants the U.S. to send astronauts back to the moon as soon as 2024. He says this “will ensure America’s space program once again leads and inspires all of humanity.”

Supporters of the plan say a new moon mission would help the U.S. remain a leader in space exploration. They worry that the U.S. is falling behind other nations, especially China. In January, China became the first country to land a rover on the far side of the moon (the area of the moon not visible from Earth). Plus, the president says, a lunar mission could prepare astronauts for trips to Mars.

But others argue that returning to the moon would be a step backward. Instead, they want NASA to focus on going deeper into space. Besides, some say, the best way to explore space is with robots, not humans. Robots are safer and cheaper since they don’t need to return to Earth.

Here’s what two of our readers think.

Yes!

We shouldn’t stop exploring the moon just because we’ve been there. Sure, sending astronauts back may cost billions of dollars. But it would be worth it. There’s still so much to be learned. After all, humans have explored only about 5 percent of the moon’s surface. Imagine how much less we would know about Earth if that little of it had been studied.

Some people say NASA should focus on visiting other planets. But why should astronauts travel so far when the moon is in our backyard?

No!

Landing astronauts on the moon was a great achievement, but going back would be a waste of money. NASA spent a total of about $20 billion on the 17 Apollo missions. Just one new mission would likely cost more than $100 billion. We could use that money to help solve problems here on Earth, like poverty.

If NASA wants to return to the moon, it could save a lot of money by sending rovers. Plus, why risk human lives? Even with today’s technology, you never know what could go wrong.
